How to boost your child's self esteem

The coronavirus pandemic and subsequent lockdown has meant that many children and young people have not been in school since March 2020. This will have provoked varied emotional responses and many challenges for children, parents and schools. There may well be a lack of confidence amongst children and increased anxiety about transitioning into the next school year.

As a parent you play an important role in shaping the way your child sees the world. You invest in their education, physical wellbeing and material needs - how do you invest in their emotional development? How do you help them to cultivate a positive self esteem?

Self esteem is what helps us feel good about ourselves. It gives us the confidence we need to try new things. It is the resilience to stick with things even if they don’t go to plan. Self esteem makes us feel valued and loved, it equips us to develop new friendships.

A lack of self esteem in children can result in feeling down, nervous, isolated, loss of friendships, inability to try new things and possibly impact concentration and ability to do well at school .

Accepting your child for who they are rather than trying to make them someone they are not is important. I t can stop you getting frustrated and prevent your child from feeling inadequate and that they don’t meet your expectations.

See the love, praise and affection you give your child over the summer as an emotional investment in their wellbeing. Try paying your child a compliment each day about something they have done or a character trait that you want to encourage in them, It is an easy thing to do but an effective way of improving their confidence.
